Congratulations on the whole endeavor. I can only imagine the amount of time and soul you've plowed into this.
I'm awed by the exhaustive research, the way you sleuthed out photos, the great tales and inventive layouts. You really hit a home run . . . wait, you really lit the lamp with this one.

Writing history is not just a simple recitation of facts. Ask some area historians who know: Carlos Schwantes, Keith Quincy, William Youngs, John Fahey.
That's true even of sport histories. Jim Stinson, author of "Tournament Fever," still the best history of the State B Basketball Tournament, knows that well enough.
And it's true of Paul Delaney's "Saturday Nights Were Special: A History of Hockey in Spokane." The result of six years of research and writing, this self-published book is as exhaustive a look at Spokane hockey as you can imagine.
It's also immensely readable. Delaney, motor sports correspondent for The Spokesman-Review, has a brisk writing style, and he specializes in telling the stories behind the headlines and statistics.
- Did you know that former Spokane Comet star Max Mekilok still harbors a grudge against one-time Nelson Leaf player-coach Frank Arnett?
- That at the opening game of the 1955-56 season, a deflected puck shot by Spokane Flyer Ralph Luke flew into the stands and hit his own son?
- Or the true history of the Chiefs logo?
It's all here.

The first of these, Saturday Nights Were Special, was written by Paul Delaney of Spokane and is obviously a labour of love. It's a soft cover book that was released in the spring and is absolutely loaded with stories, anecdotes, names and faces from hockey's stay in Spokane.
Delaney has scored at least a hat trick with his effort.

I received your book last week and was hardly able to put it down until I finished reading it. The book far surpassed my expectations. What a great book!

I have been following hockey since 1970 when my Dad first drove a friend and me to Trail to watch the Smokies....and I've been hooked ever since . Your book is absolutely FABULOUS!!! Once I opened it, I couldn't put it down....it brought back so many fun memories of hockey in Spokane. You did a great job.....and thanks from all of us "oldtimer" hockey fans!
