Were you part of the wild on-ice celebration that followed the 1970 Allan Cup when the Spokane Jets became the first United States-based team to win Canada's  Senior  Amateur Championship?

It was truly a time when hockey hysteria gripped the city. Hundreds of fans camped on the sidewalk that ringed the Coliseum, waiting for a chance to buy their share of the coveted 5,500 seats or the few hundred other "standing room only," tickets.

This was arguably one of the crowning moments in the city's sports history, and just one of many memorable events that was featured in  “Saturday Nights Were Special: The History of Hockey in Spokane," when published in 2001.

But that Allan Cup championship was preceded by two United States Amateur Hockey Association senior titles in 1949 and 1950, and then followed by Spokane teams winning three more Canadian senior championships between 1970 and 1980. Then came the era of junior hockey, the Spokane Chiefs and their pair of coveted Memorial Cups that were won in 1991 and 2008.

Sure, Montreal may lay claim to winning 24 Stanley Cups, but we’re pretty certain Spokane hockey teams can proudly boast of having won more national championships than any other U.S. city.

Work is currently ongoing on the newest edition of this classic tale that will take readers from the 2000-2001 season through to the present day. The new edition will offer a totally new look and design, plus will include many more unique photos and stories of Spokane’s championship hockey tradition.

Now make sure you send up an e-mail or visit our Facebook page so we can keep you up to date on news when the latest edition will be available – and how you can pre-order your copy that will include a most unique and special gift of Spokane’s hockey history.
